Native American beadwork, like quill work before it, is a decorative art form. Almost as soon as seed beads were available, native women invented two techniques for using them: loom beading and applique embroidery. Those two techniques are still in use today. Loom-beading and a form of single-needle weaving (peyote beading) are not adaptations of techniques known to European or other cultures – they are native inventions. The variety of beads introduced to North America is vast. Small glass beads are often known as Seed Beads. Italy was one of the most prolific manufacturers of these small glass beads. Most of these beads were made using the “drawn” method. A glass blower would blow a bubble in a molten blob of glass. Other workers, often young boys, would grasp the soft glass bubble and pull it into a long thin tube. The air bubble would create the hole going the length of the tube. Some references state that these tubes could be up to 150 feet long. The tube would be broken into small pieces after it cooled. Finally, the pieces were reheated, and tumbled to smooth the edges. Finished beads were sorted by size. Continue reading Seed Beads in North America

Native American culture has a rich history of using beads for both ceremonial and decorative purposes. Seed beads, in particular, have been an integral part of Native American culture for centuries. In this article, you will read about a variety of beads and their use by Native American crafters.
These Imitation Braintan Leggins will brighten up your outfit! The crafter made them from soft Imitation Braintan Deerskin. He attached two beaded strips in White, Yellow, Royal Blue, Cheyenne Pink and Periwinkle Seed Beads. Then he painted the side flaps Green and the bottoms Yellow. He attached 4″ long yarn fringe tassels in Green, Yellow and Purple to the sides of the flaps. The crafter cut graduated fringe ranging from 3″ long to 2″ long into the side flaps. Imitation Braintan Deerskin ties are attached at the top.
These Leggins measure 32″ long. The width varies from 12″ wide at the top to 7″ wide at the ankle. A previous owner wore these Leggins. You will see signs of wear and places where the green paint has rubbed off. They remain in good, usable condition. One of a Kind!

Native Americans of the Plains commonly use Lazy Stitch to create beaded designs on clothing and accessories. Instead of creating a Loomwork Strip that you later attach to the item, with Lazy Stitch you sew the beads directly to the fabric or leather. The design should be drawn to actual finished scale on a piece of paper then traced onto the work surface. Designs that are going to appear on opposite sides of an item should be reversed for a mirrored effect. For example, on a vest, the design should appear as a mirror image on each side.
You can also bead directly onto a leather strip which you can later attach to your item. This technique allows for the creation of beaded designs that you can add to Blankets or Buffalo Robes, Leggings, Leather Shirts, Pipe Bags and other bags, and Wrist Cuffs.
We offer native american beads in a variety of sizes and materials for your crafting and decoration projects, including faceted, translucent, wampum and reproduction beads. And don’t forget your other beading necessities: needles, needle threaders, beeswax, assorted types of thread and beading looms, all available in our catalog and here in our online store.

What is a “hank” of beads?
Quality beads are temporarily strung in “hanks”. This is a symbol of quality and uniformity in beads. Hanks are the equivalent of 240 linear inches of beads. generally these are strung in 12 loops of beads 20″ long. A hank of 10/0 weighs about 1.5 oz. Bead sizes are indicated by numbers, with larger numbers indicating smaller sizes for each bead type
Wampum beads include the white shell beadsfashioned from the North Atlantic channeled whelk shell, a sea snail with a spiral shape; and the white and purple beadsmade from the quahog, or Western North Atlantic hard-shelled clam. Quahogs are found in the waters from Cape Cod south to New York, with a great abundance in Long Island Sound. Wampum were used by the northeastern Native Americans as a form of gift exchange. European traders and politicians, using beads and trinkets, often exploited gift exchange to gain Native American favor or territory. With the scarcity of metal coins in New England, Wampum quickly evolved into a formal currency after European/Native contact, its production greatly facilitated by slender European metal drill bits. Wampum was mass produced in coastal southern New England. The Narragansetts and Pequots monopolized the manufacture and exchange of wampum in this area. Continue reading Wampum Beads History
The first European explorers and colonists gave Native Americans glass and ceramic beads as gifts and used beads for trade with them. Native Americans had made bone, shell, and stone beads long before the Europeans arrived in North America, and continued to do so. However, European glass beads, mostly from Venice, some from Holland and, later, from Poland and Czechoslovakia, became popular and sought after by Native Americans. Europeans realized early on that beads were important to Native Americans and corporations such as the Hudson Bay Trading Company developed lucrative bead-trading markets with them. The Hudson Bay Trading Company was an organized group of explorers who ventured into the North American continent for trade expeditions during the 19th century. Bead charts are visual guides that depict different types of beads that crafters use for beadwork and jewelry making. These charts typically showcase various bead shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. They can provide a reference for crafters interested in creating jewelry or art pieces with antique beads.
We have been collecting old bead charts for years. Many of these cards provide us with dates and the locations where the beads were manufactured. When you are trying to match old beads for your projects, these charts make invaluable resources. You can also use these cards to date antique beadwork. Beaded items can only be as old as the newest bead used to create it.
Store your favorite pipe with this one of a kind Pipe Bag Northern Plains Style. The crafter made it with Braintanned Deerskin Leather. He painted both sides green with painted handprints. They are red on one side and yellow on the other. He used lazy stitch to create a beaded strip on one side of the bag with White, Transparent Navy Blue, Yellow and White Center Red Seed Beads. On the bottom, he created a beaded panel using lazy stitch. This design features White, Yellow, Navy Blue and a different stock of White Center Red Seed Beads.
Below this, you will find a section of beaded fringe. The beaded panel features small reproduction Wampum Beads in White, Black, Blue, Red and Yellow. Twelve inches of painted Deerskin Leather fringe hangs from the bottom of this panel. At the top, the crafter added tab fringe. He painted the leather yellow and added red and black triangular designs to each tab. A piece of Braintanned Deerskin Leather Lacing serves as a tie to hold the bag closed.
This Pipe Bag Northern Plains Style measures 16 inches x 6.5 inches, not including the beaded fringe. The beaded panel and fringe measures about 14 inches long for an overall length of about 30 inches. One of a Kind!
This Red Blanket Strip is beaded on Selvedge Edge wool. Master Craftsman Andy Bullock beaded the strip and Rosettes on Braintanned Deerskin Leather. He used Pony Trader Blue, Mauve, White and Cobalt Blue Seed Beads to create the 7 row strip and the 4″ Rosettes. Braintanned Deerskin Lacing tassels hang from the center of each of the four Rosettes. Trade Beads, Pink Pony Beads, Blue Basket Beads, Brass Beads and small metal rings decorate each tassel.
The Native Americans of the Northern Plains started making Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when two halves of a Braintanned Buffalo Hide was sewn together to create one large robe. Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes. They add their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.
The beaded portion of this Blanket Strip measures 43.5″ long x 3.25″ wide . It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 4″ in diameter. The blanket itself measures approximately 60″ x 45″. One of a Kind!
