Blanket Strip - Dark Red

Blanket Strip – Dark Red

This Blanket Strip – Dark Red comes with gorgeous Pony Bead Rosettes. Master Craftsman Andy Bullock created this Blanket Strip with Dark Red wool.  He beaded the strip and Rosettes on Braintanned Deerskin Leather. Twisted Braintanned Deerskin tassels hang from the center of each of the four Rosettes. White Center Red Crow Beads decorate each tassel.

Andy beaded this strip with 8/0 Pony Beads. For the rosettes he used Reproduction White Center Cranberry, Pony Trader Blue, Mustard, Cobalt Blue and White Pony beads. He composed the remainder of the strip with 7 rows of lazy stitch beaded with 8/0 Pony Beads in Pony Trader Blue, Cobalt Blue, and White.

The Native Americans of the Northern Plains created Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when two Braintanned Buffalo Hides were sewn together to create one large robe. Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes. They added their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.

The beaded portion of this Blanket Strip measures 56″ long. It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 7.5″ in diameter. The blanket itself measures approximately 65″ x 45″.

Native American Dance Shawls

Native American Dance Shawls

Native American Dance Shawls

Native American Dance Shawls are a regalia item you will always see at Powwows. Whether simple or fancy, most women wear them or carry them on their arms.  Many Powwow circles do not allow women into the circle if they are not wearing or carrying a shawl.

Dance Shawls are not a pre-contact clothing item.  They were likely adapted from women’s blankets. They are made of fabric with fringe or ribbons decorating the edges.  Fancy Shawls feature beadwork or fabric or ribbon applique along with colorful fringe.

Penobscot Dance of Resistance

Penobscot Dance of Resistance

Penobscot Dance of Resistance

Tradition in the History of a People. By Pauleena MacDougall. 264 pgs. Softcover.

Historians predicted the demise of the Penobscot Indians early in the nineteenth century, but the tribe is thriving at the opening of the twenty-first century. Although by the early 1800s the Penobscots had been rendered all but invisible to the dominant culture, by selectively adapting to changing circumstances, they have won back land and visibility.

The vital importance of employing elements of cultural resistance as a survival mechanism has, until now, been underestimated. A decade of political activism culminated in the precedent-setting 1980 Maine Indian Land Claims settlement. Today the Penobscots run small industries, manage their natural resources, and provide health services, K-through-8 education, and social services to the poor and elderly of their community.

MacDougall demonstrates that Penobscot legend, linguistics, dance, and oral tradition became -foundations of resistance- against assimilation into the dominant culture. She thoughtfully and accessibly reconstructs from published, archival, and oral sources the tribes metaphorical and triumphant Dance of Resistance — founded on spiritual power, reverence for homeland, and commitment to self-determination — from colonial times to the present. In a larger context, Dance of Resistances examination of the history of one Indian nation illustrates the complex interaction of cultural systems in America.

Gourd Dance Rattles

The Legend and the History  –  The Dance and the Regalia

This article about the Native American Gourd Dance was written by Paul R. Burke in 1989.  We are presenting it here in its original format with his permission.  Paul discusses the history of the Dance and relates several legends related to its origins.  He further discusses how the dance has been done in more recent times and describes known variations of it.  Though its origins are unclear, the dance may have originated with the Southern Plains Tribes like the Kiowa, Comanche and Cheyenne.

Accessories that are used for this dance include a wearable Blanket, Rattles (often made with real gourds) and and Bandoliers.  You will find Wool Fabric and Trade Silver Brooches  at WanderingBull.com that you can use to make your own Blanket.  Check our Accessories section for one of a kind Bandoliers.

Breech Cloth Beaded Red

Breech Cloth Beaded Red

Beaded Red Wool Breech Cloth

Add this Breech Cloth Beaded Red to your dance clothes!  The crafter used Red Wool with Black Bias Tape Trim.  He created a beaded design using (mostly) White Seed Beads.  Double Curve designs appear above a series of arrow designs.  The crafter accented the Double Curve designs with a real Quahog Wampum Disc at the top.  Nine real Quahog Wampum Beads accent the row below.  Bright red fabric lines the back side. This Breech Cloth measures 62 inches long and 11 inches wide.  We got it from a collection.  It is in like new condition. One of a Kind!

Breech Cloths (also known as Breech Clouts) are lengths of fabric or leather. Native American men traditionally wear breech cloths (or breech clouts) alone or with Leggins.  A Breech Cloth goes between the legs. The front and back are draped over a belt or Leather Lacing tie. They provide protection for sensitive areas of the body while allowing for freedom of movement, especially important for activities like hunting, gathering, and dancing. Men can wear them plain or decorate them with Brooches, Beadwork or ribbon work.  They can also cut them from a wool blanket with a striped selvedge edge, and the stripes will serve as decoration.
