Pony Beads 5/0

Pony Beads 5/0

5/0 Pony Beads

Pony Beads 5/0  are larger than Seed Beads, but smaller than Crow Beads.   They get their name from the pony and mule trains that brought these beads to Western North America. Pony Beads were available to the Native Americans of the Plains before the introduction of Seed Beads.

The variety of beads introduced to North America is vast. Small glass beads are often known as Seed Beads. Italy was one of the most prolific manufacturers of these small glass beads. Most of these beads were made using the “drawn” method. A glass blower would blow a bubble in a molten blob of glass. Other workers, often young boys, would grasp the soft glass bubble and pull it into a long thin tube. The air bubble would create the hole going the length of the tube. Some references state that these tubes could be up to 150 feet long.  Craftsmen broke the tube into small pieces after it cooled. Then they reheated the pieces and tumbled them to smooth the edges.  They sorted the finished beads by size.

Pony Beads in size 5/0  are the larger of the Pony Beads.   These Beads measure approx. 5 mm.  You can use Single Ply Imitation Sinew or Beaded Thread with these. You will get approx. 300 beads per ounce.

You can purchase  5/0 Beads in one ounce or 1/2 kilo packages.

Blanket Strip – Dark Red – 25% Off!

Blanket Strip - Dark Red

Blanket Strip – Dark Red

This Blanket Strip – Dark Red comes with gorgeous Pony Bead Rosettes. Master Craftsman Andy Bullock created this Blanket Strip with Dark Red wool.  He beaded the strip and Rosettes on Braintanned Deerskin Leather. Twisted Braintanned Deerskin tassels hang from the center of each of the four Rosettes. White Center Red Crow Beads decorate each tassel.

Andy beaded this strip with 8/0 Pony Beads. For the rosettes he used Reproduction White Center Cranberry, Pony Trader Blue, Mustard, Cobalt Blue and White Pony beads. He composed the remainder of the strip with 7 rows of lazy stitch beaded with 8/0 Pony Beads in Pony Trader Blue, Cobalt Blue, and White.

The Native Americans of the Northern Plains created Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when two Braintanned Buffalo Hides were sewn together to create one large robe. Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes. They added their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.

The beaded portion of this Blanket Strip measures 56″ long. It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 7.5″ in diameter. The blanket itself measures approximately 65″ x 45″.

Hat Antique Glengarry

Hat Antique Glengarry

Beaded Antique Glengarry Style Hat

This Hat Antique Glengarry is ready to join your beadwork collection.  The crafter decorated this Brown velveteen cap in classic Iroquois style floral designs.  He or she used 8/0 Pony Beads in White, Clear,  Pony Trader Blue, Light Blue, Greasy Yellow, Amber, Transparent Red, and Dark Pink to create the floral designs.  The the crafter added sequins between the flowers.  Lines of White, White Center Red, and Pumpkin Seed Beads outlines the edges of the three velveteen pieces and decorate most of the top.  Red bias tape outlined the edges of this hat.   The crafter lined the inside with brown fabric.

The Glengarry hat is a traditional Scottish cap that Scottish military regiments wore. The name comes from the Glengarry region in Scotland.  Traders imported hats like these for exchange with Native Americans during the 19th century. Iroquois and Wabanaki crafters decorated them with Beadwork and Ribbons to make colorful accessories.  This Antique Glengarry Cap measures about 10.5″ long  and about 5″ wide at the top.  You will see bead loss in the main designs and the Seed Bead lines.  Most of the bias tape edging has deteriorated.  We are selling it as a collectible. Whimsy Scalloped Edge Pin Cushion – 25% Off!

Iroquois Whimsy Scalloped Pin Cushion

Whimsy Scalloped Edge Pin Cushion

A crafter beaded this Scalloped Edge Pin Cushion Whimsy using Clear and colored Pony Beads. You will also see some gray-looking Basket Beads. The crafter also added Beaded Looped Tassels with Clear Pony Beads on each corner of the Pin Cushion.

It is a classic example of the Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.

This Pin Cushion features a floral/botanical design. The crafter beaded the design on what may have been a tan or yellow velveteen fabric which has mostly worn away.   Polished cotton in teal blue surrounded by red bias tape edging makes up the back.  You will see holes in the back fabric and sawdust is coming out.

The Beadwork on this Pin Cushion is beautiful, but the piece has not aged well.  In addition to the holes in the back fabric, the front shows significant tears.  Much of the velveteen has worn away.  Most of the beadwork seems to be intact, but you will see that some of the edge tassels have come loose. Some of the edge beads have fallen off as well.  You will find several pins remain in this Whimsy, signs that a previous owner used it for a Pin Cushion.

It measures about 7″ x  8″ not including the side tassels. The thickness is about 3″.

Blue fabric lines the inside of the canoe and a red ribbon makes the hanging loop. The canoe measures 4.5″ long, 2″ tall and 1.5″ at the widest part of the boat.

The crafter made the strawberry with blue and green velvet, dark green 8/0 pony beads around the center and on the hanging loop. In addition, they added three hanging tassels with white and blue seed beads. The strawberry measures 3.5″ tall and 2″ in diameter at the widest part on the top.

These pink Earrings Conch Shell will delight someone who doesn’t have pierced ears.  The crafter made them with one inch diameter Conch Shell discs.  He attached a single White Pony Bead to the top of each.  They hang from clip on style earring backs.  One of a Kind!

Pink conch shells come from the queen conch (pronounced “konk”), a large marine mollusk with a scientific name Strombus gigas. Many people are attracted to their distinctive pink coloring. Crafters use queen conch shells in various decorative and ornamental applications. They are particularly popular as souvenirs and in traditional crafts. Due to overharvesting and habitat destruction, queen conch populations have declined in some areas. In response to these concerns, there are regulations and conservation efforts in place to protect these mollusks and their shells.
