Catlinite- Bison

This hand‑carved Catlinite Bison stands out as a compact yet powerful display piece. The artist shaped the figure from genuine Catlinite pipestone and etched the initials “BE” on the underside. An original “Indian Made Pipestone Craft” sticker remains on the bottom, confirming its origin and authenticity. The carving measures approximately 3.25 inches long and 2.5 inches tall, making it an ideal size for shelves, cases, or curated collections. Its smooth finish and classic bison form highlight the beauty of Catlinite and the skill of the maker.

One of a Kind.

Billy “Big Eagle” Bryan (1942–2012) was a respected Ojibwe–Dakota pipemaker from Pipestone, Minnesota. He upheld a long family tradition of quarrying and carving Catlinite. Born into the Bryan and Crow pipemaking families, he learned the craft as a boy. He spent more than six decades shaping pipes, animal figures, and cultural pieces that reflected both skill and heritage. He carved daily at the Pipestone National Monument and welcomed visitors with stories and demonstrations. His buffalo and bear forms became signature works. His role in cultural gatherings, including the Gathering of the Sacred Pipes Sundance, strengthened his reputation as a teacher and storyteller. Until his passing in 2012, he remained a beloved culture‑bearer whose artistry and generosity shaped the pipemaking community.
