Antique Beaded Glengarry
This Hat- Antique Beaded Glengarry is ready to join your beadwork collection. The crafter decorated the brown velveteen cap with a classic Iroquois‑style floral motif. They used 8/0 pony beads in White, Clear, Pony Trader Blue, Light Blue, Greasy Yellow, Amber, White Center Red, and Cheyenne Pink to create the floral motif. Lines of translucent amber seed beads once outlined the edges of the three velveteen panels, though most of those beads have come off over time. On the top, around the beaded floral motif, you can still see the remaining line of beads. Red bias tape finishes the edges of the hat, although portions of the tape have deteriorated with age. The crafter lined the interior with brown cotton fabric, which has also deteriorated over the years. The front of the hat shows wear from repeated use; the fabric has come apart in that area, and you will notice some bead loss.
The Glengarry hat is a traditional Scottish cap worn by Scottish military regiments, and its name comes from the Glengarry region of Scotland. Traders imported hats like these to exchange with Native Americans during the 19th century. Iroquois and Wabanaki artists decorated them with beadwork and ribbons, transforming them into colorful accessories.
This antique Glengarry cap measures approximately 10.5 inches long and about 6 inches wide at the top. You will see bead loss along the outer edge.
