Hand‑Quilled Thunderbird Motif Bag

This Bag – Quilled Thunderbird Motif is a modern reproduction inspired by an 1825‑era design. It features quillwork in brown, light brown, dark brown, and natural tones on Braintanned leather. The crafter added 18 red deer‑hair cone drops along the bottom.  Six additional drops accented by antique white pony beads hang beneath the Thunderbird motif. Otter fur extends from beneath the Thunderbird motif to the bottom of the bag.  Antique white pony beads edge the bottom and sides. The bag measures approximately 14.5 inches long by 6 inches wide.

One of a Kind.

Braintanned quilled bags have deep roots across the Northern and Central Plains. Makers used softened, smoke‑tanned deer and elk hides as durable canvases for quillwork. Before glass beads appeared in the 19th century, porcupine quills dyed with natural pigments formed the main decorative art. Makers created geometric patterns, clan symbols, and powerful figures such as the Thunderbird. Each motif carried cultural meaning and reflected regional identity. Braintanned leather offered a supple surface that held quillwork securely. These bags served both practical and ceremonial roles. Modern artists continue the tradition and blend historic methods with contemporary interpretations to honor early 1800s Plains quillwork.
