Antique Watch Pocket Whimsy

A crafter created this Beaded Watch Pocket Whimsy around 1900. It is a classic example of a Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenir. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.

This whimsy comes in the shape of a wall pocket that holds your pocket watch. The artist chose Cheyenne Pink, Arapaho Green, Turquoise and White Center Red Seed Beads to create the design. A blue glass ‘jewel’ appears in the center of the circular design.  Then the crafter used clear and silvered Seed Beads to the edges of the whimsy.  The bottom features loops of Amber Basket Beads.

A strand of Cheyenne Pink Seed Beads (and a single Clear bead) forms the hanging loop. Polished cotton in a reddish brown color covers the front and back.

This Whimsy came from a previous owner, but it remains in very good condition. There doesn’t appear to be any bead loss.

This Beaded Whimsy will make an unusual addition to your antique or whimsy collection!

It measures approx 3.5″ x 2.75″ not including the Basket Bead loops.

An Iroquois crafter created this Pin Cushion Whimsy using Clear Seed Beads and Clear Basket Beads.  It is a classic example of the Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.

This Whimsy comes in the shape of a ladies’ boot.    The front shows a dark red fabric.  Crafters often create Whimsies with velveteen, but we can see no nap left on this fabric to suggest it was velveteen.  Polished cotton in a tan color makes up the back.

Someone added a braided Wool Yarn loop to the back of this Whimsy.  You will see a frayed place on the yarn, so you may not be able to hang it with this yarn. You will see some staining on the back, but the beadwork remains intact.

The Antique Iroquois Beaded Pincushion Whimsy measures 4″ long x 3″ wide.

Iroquois Whimsy Scalloped Pin Cushion

Iroquois Whimsy Scalloped Pin Cushion
Iroquois Whimsy Scalloped Pin Cushion

An Iroquois crafter beaded this scalloped edge Pin Cushion Whimsy using Clear and colored Pony Beads. You will also see some gray-looking Basket Beads. The crafter also added Beaded Looped Tassels with Clear Pony Beads on each corner of the Pin Cushion.

It is a classic example of the Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.

This Pin Cushion features a floral/botanical design. The crafter beaded the design on what may have been a tan or yellow velveteen fabric which has mostly worn away.   Polished cotton in teal blue surrounded by red bias tape edging makes up the back.  You will see holes in the back fabric and sawdust is coming out.

The Beadwork on this Pin Cushion is beautiful, but the piece has not aged well.  In addition to the holes in the back fabric, the front shows significant tears.  Much of the velveteen has worn away.  Most of the beadwork seems to be intact, but you will see that some of the edge tassels have come loose. Some of the edge beads have fallen off as well.  You will find several pins remain in this Whimsy, signs that a previous owner used it for a Pin Cushion.

It measures about 7″ x  8″ not including the side tassels. The thickness is about 3″.

Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.

This Pin Cushion features a bird design surrounded by leaves in the corners. One corner still has looped tassels that probably appeared on the other corners as well. The crafter beaded the design on a tan velveteen fabric.  Most of the nap of this fabric has worn away.  Polished cotton in a tan color makes up the back.

You will see many beads are missing from the edges of the pin cushion itself. Most of the design remains intact but the beads have become very dark.  Some of the clear beads are red and yellow. You will also see Green Seed beads in two of the corners. A white paint like substance appears in a few spots on the front.

A previous owner used this Pin Cushion, and it still has several pins in it.

This Beaded Pin Cushion will make an unusual addition to your antique or whimsy collection!

This Pin Cushion features a botanical design. It comes with three  beaded “berry” drops. Unlike the strawberries that held sand for sharpening your sewing needles, stuffing fills these berries.  One of them has broken open. Strands of clear beads connect the three berries.

Polished cotton in a rich teal color makes up the back.  You will see obvious wear on the edges.  Some beads are missing from the pin cushion itself. The bead loss on the berries is obvious.  Only two beaded tassels that hung from the berries remain.

Antique Whimsy Lot

Antique Whimsy Lot
Antique Whimsy Lot

Four unique Antique Beaded Whimsies come with this Lot.  You will get a Mini Purse, a Pincushion like ornament and two Wall Pockets.

These are classic examples of Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these Whimsies for the tourist trade.

The Mini Purse comes in Dark Red fabric over a cardboard base with Clear Pony Beads and Basket Bead designs.  The front flap features a Botanical design and the back has a Bird design.  It measures about 3.75″ long x 2.5″ wide.   The fabric has deteriorated and it has suffered noticeable bead loss.  Only one of the closure clasps remains and one of the loop tassels has fallen off.

The Pincushion Ornament features a rounded top and a pointed bottom.  The crafter used Red fabric for the front and what may have been Blue on the back.  He or she bound the edges with bias tape.  On the front, the crafter created a medallion design in Clear and Transparent Green Seed Beads and Blue Basket Beads.  Below this, you will find White Seed Beads spelling NIAGARA FALLS 1924.  A loop of assorted Seed Beads at the top allowed the Pincushion to hang.   This piece measures about 4.5″ x 4.5″ at its widest points.  You will see some bead loss in the word ‘FALLS’ and the Fabric has faded in color.  Otherwise, this piece remains in very good condition for its age.

The smaller Wall Pocket has lost most of its Red Wool Fabric and edging.  Most of the Clear Seed Bead and Basket Beads that form the Botanical designs remain.  The back fabric is intact.  It measures about 6.5″ tall x 4″ wide.

The larger Wall Pocket features a deep Wine colored velveteen on the front.   The Clear Seed Beads of the floral medallions remain mostly intact, but the Basket Bead centers have come off of most of them.  You will see further bead loss around the edges and some of the Clear Seed Bead tassel loops have come off.  If there was a hanging loop at the top, it is no longer present.  The back fabric shows spotting and small holes. The front pocket retains its shape, the cardboard has not collapsed. This Wall Pocket measures about 8.5″ tall (not including the Beaded Tassels) x 5″ at the widest point.

Hand Made Dolls

Hand Made Dolls
Hand Made Dolls

If there is a universal child’s toy, it may well be a doll.  Whether hastily made from scrap material at hand, or painstakingly made to exacting detail, dolls “speak” to our humanity.  At first glance, dolls are simple play-things… suffering the ravages of many other mere “toys”.  However, there are many other reasons dolls are created and decorated for children.  Dolls may also be used to teach children important cultural and educational lessons in dress, hair style, adornment and dexterity.

Some dolls are created for specific purposes or occasions.  Others are made with whimsy and artistic license.  There are no limits to the variety of dolls.  This author is particularly interested in beadwork as a decorative medium.  By making a basic cloth doll body, there are unlimited ways to construct and decorate these miniature personalities.
