A wampum bracelet is a piece of traditional Native American jewelry crafted from wampum beads. Artisans typically string the bracelets together using leather, sinew, or plant fibers, often incorporating intricate patterns and designs that showcase their artistry and craftsmanship. Native Americans originally shaped beads from the shells of Quahog Clams and Whelk shells. Peoples from Northeastern North America used these beads to create necklaces, belts, arm bands, and decorative elements for clothing. They carved wampum shells into discs and cylindrical, straight-sided beads measuring about 1/8” long, then drilled holes through them. When glass wampum beads became available, Native American crafters began using looms to weave elaborate multi-row belts and straps.

Wampum Belts

One of the oldest known Wampum Belts is the Hiawatha Belt, which dates to the mid 16th century. It recorded the formation of the League of the Iroquois. This belt has a pattern that shows four hollow squares outlined in white and a white tree shaped design in the center, all connected by white lines. The five nations represented in this belt were the Seneca, the Cayuga, the Onondaga, the Oneida, and the Mohawk.  The belt maker created this belt using the same technique that our crafter used to make this Bracelet 3 Row Wampum on a much larger scale.
