Hand‑Quilled Wing‑Bone Whistle

This Whistle – Bird Wing Bone Quilled shows precise shaping and traditional craftsmanship. The crafter hollowed and cleaned the bird wing bone, then shaped the mouthpiece and air channel so the bone functions as a clear‑sounding whistle. After forming the working whistle, the crafter quilled it in red, white, and blue using braided porcupine quills wrapped tightly around imitation sinew so the quillwork stays secure and does not shift. The quilled band sits firmly around the bird wing‑bone. The whistle measures approximately 5.5 inches long, giving it a compact size with strong visual appeal.

These whistles are traditional Native instruments made from hollow bird bones, with the bone serving as the resonating tube. Depending on the tradition and maker, whistles can vary considerably in construction, sound, decoration, and cultural purpose. Bird bones were practical materials because many are naturally hollow and lightweight.
