Rattle Gourd Dance 13″

This Gourd Dance Rattle features Brick Stitch decorations on the handle. The crafter made it using an new metal shaker.   He carved a spiral design into the wood handle. On the handle he attached Brick Stitch Tubes with geometric designs. He used 11/0 cut beads in Royal Blue, Periwinkle, White and Wine.  At the top, the crafter attached a tuft of White Horsehair extending from a section of Brick Stitch beadwork. 5″ of Twisted Deerskin Leather Fringe hangs from the bottom.

The Rattle measures 13″ long not including the Twisted Fringe. The Brick Stitch beadwork sections measure 1.5″ long, 2″ long and 0.75″ long.  The crafter added ‘rattles’ to the inside, but you can unscrew the handle from the canister so you can add your own dry corn, beans, stones, or seed beads for sound.

The dance for which this Rattle was made is called the Gourd Dance. The gourd dance is a Kiowa dance ceremony. The dance honors all warriors and veterans.
