Braintanned Quilled Bag

This Pipe Bag- Double-sided Quillwork features quillwork on both the front and back. The crafter made it with Braintanned deerskin. On the front, he created a geometric quillwork design in red, yellow, and purple, centered around a yellow‑and‑purple star motif. The back displays a straight‑line quill pattern in the same colors, echoing the front design.

At the bottom, the crafter attached 27 quilled strips, each wrapped in matching colored quills and arranged in a coordinated pattern. Beneath these strips, the artist added 12 inches of fringe, braiding 5 inches of each fringe and accenting the braids with red, yellow, and royal‑blue crow beads. Above the fringe and just under the quilled strips, the crafter added tiny brass bells—14 on the front and 13 on the back.

The crafter also included tiny brass sequins and two quill‑wrapped tassels, two on each side of the bag. Each of these has a cone drop at the end.

The bag measures 45 inches long overall, including 18 inches of fringe. Some of the quills show natural breakage from age, particularly on the back and around the top opening.
