Northern Plains Style Doll

This antique Northern Plains–style doll shows exceptional handmade detail and a bold visual presence.  The crafter hand‑stitched the Braintanned leather dress and jacket to create authentic texture and traditional craftsmanship.  A black beaded face and wool yarn hair give her a striking look.  The crafter beaded her jacket with Green, Translucent Yellow, and Pink glass beads.  Her high top moccasins are beaded in Green and Translucent Yellow.  She stands about 14 inches tall.  You will see some bead loss due to her age.  With cohesive beadwork, classic materials, and solid preservation, this doll stands out in any Native American art collection or curated display.

One of a Kind.

A Northern Plains–style doll reflects a long cultural tradition among Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Crow, and other Plains nations. These dolls taught children about clothing styles, social roles, and ceremonial responsibilities while preserving family and tribal identity. Makers used hide, cloth, quills, and later glass beads gained through trade, creating miniature versions of adult regalia that blended artistry with instruction. In the late 19th century, reservation life and growing tourism reshaped this practice, turning doll‑making into both cultural expression and economic support. Today, Northern Plains dolls continue to show resilience, continuity, and innovation as modern Native artists refine the form with culturally grounded design.
