Mini Dance Shawl in Royal Blue with Ribbon Trim

Enhance your powwow look with this mini Dance Shawl Royal with Rose & Silver Fringe!  The seamstress made it with Royal Blue gabardine fabric.  She added Silver and Dark Rose (a berry pink color) chainette fringe  to three sides of it. Then she attached 3″ wide ribbon trim in Lavender, Orange and a watercolor stripe pattern across the bottom.  This is a small shawl, measuring 55″ long x 27.5″ wide.   This size is ideal for draping over your arm.  One of a Kind!

Most women wear Dance Shawls into the Powwow Circle. Dance Shawls can be simple fabric blanks with chainette or ribbon fringe.  Some women create elaborately decorated shawls for Fancy Dancing.  They embellish their shawls with ribbonwork, embroidery or beadwork.

The Shawl Dance was created for women.  Unlike the historical dances for women, the Shawl Dance gave women a chance to wear more colorful, elaborate clothing.  Over the following decades, Fancy Shawls became more elaborate and the Dance became more energetic and athletic.  Today Fancy Shawl Dancers resemble butterflies with their bright outstretched ‘wings’ as they twirl and leap around the dance circle.  The Fancy Shawl Dance originated during the modern Pan-Indian time.   Powwow participants consider it an Inter-Tribal Dance, not associated with any individual Native American tradition.
