Huron Moose Hair Embroidered Disc

Huron Moose Hair Embroidered Disc

This antique Huron Moose Hair Embroidered Disc is well made and from circa 1900. The intricate strawberry and floral design is made on red wool with French knot details and backed with natural Birchbark. There is some insect damage to the undyed natural hair on the strawberries and around the perimeter.
North Eastern Native Americans learned embroidery from French nuns in convent schools in Quebec using cloth and silk thread and later started using their own materials.  The moose hair is taken from the mane of the moose where the hair is the longest and white which is better used for dying. The birch bark and moose hair are damaged easily and very delicate so many pieces have not aged well. Many of the surviving pieces are in museums and private collections and do have some damage.
