Drum- Old Log

This double-headed Old Log Drum needs a special place in your collection.  Crafted from a single old log, this pre‑1900 drum is a rare survivor and remains in impressive condition for its age. The rawhide still retains its natural hair—species unknown—adding to its early, hand‑made character. There is a tiny hole on one section of the rawhide, likely from when the skin was originally scraped. The drum features uneven lacing consistent with 19th‑century construction, giving it the authentic, time‑worn presence collectors value.

The drum measures approximately 16″ x 7.5″.  This unique piece has a strong visual impact and will stand out in any collection.  One of a Kind.

Drums carved from a single log were common throughout the 19th century, valued for their durability, resonance, and straightforward construction. Before 1900, makers typically hollowed out an old log by hand. Once the form was ready, they then stretched rawhide over the opening to create a functional instrument. These log‑body drums were used in many settings—community gatherings, social events, and everyday music‑making. Their handmade character reflects the tools and materials available at the time. Uneven lacing, natural‑hair rawhide, and tool‑cut surfaces are all typical features of early examples. Surviving pieces from this era are increasingly scarce, making them appealing to collectors who appreciate authentic 19th‑century craftsmanship.
