Birchbark Container with Moose Hair Tufting

Handmade Birchbark Container decorated with Moose Hair

This Birchbark Container features a floral design created with tufts of Moose hair.  The artist used spruce root to hold the container together. He cut a scalloped piece of Birchbark and attached it to the top of the container.  Then he created the Yellow and Purple floral design from Moose hair on a separate piece of Birchbark and attached that to the side of the container.  The crafter made the cover with two pieces of Birchbark. A piece of Deerskin Leather Lacing holds it on the container.  Another piece allows you to open the top.  A spruce branch around the top  adds stability to the container.

Birchbark containers are traditional containers made from the bark of birch trees. The Indigenous people in North America use these containers for storing and transporting food, clothing, and other items.  This Container stands 6.75″ tall.  The bottom measures approximately 5.5″ in diameter.  The cover measures 5.5″ in diameter.  We got this Container in a collection.  You will see that some of the Moose hair tufting has broken off, but otherwise it is in very good condition!  One of a Kind!
