Gray sage holds cultural and spiritual significance in many Native American traditions. It is often used in ceremonies for purification, healing, and protection. Some communities incorporate it into smudging rituals, where the smoke is believed to cleanse negative energy and invite positive spirits. Beyond its spiritual use, gray sage has medicinal applications. Some Native communities use it to treat ailments such as skin rashes, digestive issues, and respiratory conditions. It is also one of the Four Sacred Medicines—alongside tobacco, cedar, and sweetgrass—recognized for its role in spiritual and emotional well-being.

Gray sage is also known as Salvia leucophylla, and is an aromatic sage native to the southern coastal mountain ranges of California and Baja California. It is an evergreen shrub that grows up to 5 feet tall and wide, with light green leaves that turn grayish-white as they mature. The plant produces pinkish-purple flowers in tight whorls, adding to its ornamental appeal. Gray sage is often used in xeriscape gardening due to its drought tolerance and preference for full sun and well-drained soil. It also has allelopathic properties, meaning it can inhibit the growth of nearby plants through chemical compounds released into the soil.
