Turban Crafted with Natural Otter Pelt

This Turban with Otter‑Fur Trim features a beaded band inspired by Eastern Woodlands wampum belt patterns.  Master craftsman Andy Bullock constructed this turban with careful attention to traditional form and contemporary detail.  He made the drop with red wool and attached three brooches in varying shapes and sizes to the drop.   Andy lined the interior with red floral fabric. Silk gold ribbon topped with white pony beads edges the drop.

The turban has an approx. 22 inch inside circumference and measures 3.75 inches wide.  The drop is 12 inches long.

One of a Kind.

History of the Turban

The turban has a long and diverse history across many world cultures. Makers created early forms thousands of years ago in regions such as South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Europe. People wore turbans for protection, identity, ceremony, and status, and each community developed its own distinctive styles and meanings.

In many traditions, the turban served as a marker of social rank, spiritual commitment, or cultural affiliation. Some groups used it to protect the head from sun, wind, or dust, while others incorporated elaborate wrapping techniques to express artistry and heritage. Materials varied widely, ranging from simple woven cloth to richly decorated fabrics, fur trims, beadwork, or symbolic colors.

Over time, the turban evolved into a versatile form of headwear. It appeared in ceremonial dress, daily clothing, military uniforms, and cultural regalia. Contemporary makers continue to adapt the turban, blending traditional techniques with modern materials, decorative elements, and personal expression. Today, the turban remains an enduring symbol of identity, craftsmanship, and cultural continuity.
