Hand‑Quilled Braintanned Knife Sheath

This Knife Sheath- Hand Quilled is crafted from smoked Braintanned deerskin leather. The geometric quillwork design features orange, white, and purple dyed porcupine quills. The crafter edged the sheath with 11/0 orange seed beads.  He accented the front of the sheath with several white seed beads.  Inside, two 5 inch long pieces of rawhide protect the leather from your knife. The sheath measures about 8.5 inches long and 1.25 inches wide.  An adjustable Braintanned leather neck strap allows you to wear it with your regalia.

One of a Kind!

History of a Quilled Knife Sheath

Quilled knife sheaths hold a long and respected place in Indigenous artistry across the Northern Plains and Woodlands regions. Before traders introduced glass beads, quillwork was a primary decorative art. Makers dyed, softened, and stitched porcupine quills into geometric or symbolic patterns. They often used Braintanned Deerskin to make them and added rawhide inserts to protect the sheath and blade. These sheaths carried practical value, yet makers also used them to express identity, status, and regional style. Wearers kept them on their belt or hung them from a neck strap for quick access.
