Antique Chippewa-Style Floral Beaded Velvet Vest, c. 1920s

This Chippewa-style Vest- Antique Floral Beaded dates to the 1920s. The seamstress created the black velvet foundation and lined the portions behind the beadwork with fabric for added support. The floral design showcases an attractive mix of cut and faceted seed beads in white, red, Cheyenne pink, Pony Trader Blue, amber, yellow, blue, and green. The beadwork remains remarkably intact, with only minimal bead loss considering its age.

A red fox braid trim outlines the fabric on the vest; however, the trim has deteriorated over time, as commonly seen in garments of this age. The vest closes with snap fasteners. It measures approximately 18 inches wide by 20.5 inches long. We estimate this is a men’s size small.

Condition notes: The black velvet exhibits several thin areas from wear, along with a few small holes. Despite these signs of age, this vest retains its striking visual appeal and represents an excellent example of early 20th-century Native American beadwork.
