Moccasins- Antique Cree Style

These antique Cree‑style moccasins showcase classic Cree design.  The crafter made them from smoked dark‑brown moosehide leather. The artisan machine‑stitched and hand‑sewed the sole. A vibrant floral beadwork design adorns the front and sides, featuring white, light blue, green, translucent green, light green and translucent purple seed beads. The crafter added fur to the cuffs; however, one cuff is missing its fur. The floral beadwork also shows areas of bead loss.  The moccasins measure approximately 10 inches in length and 3 inches wide at the widest point (women’s 8.5).

One of a Kind!

Cree artisans craft moccasins to express cultural identity, skill, and connection to the land. Thus, they use smoked moosehide or deerskin to create soft soles for quiet movement—ideal for hunting, snowshoeing, and ceremony. Many follow a two-piece design with an apron insert, a style rooted in the Red River region by the early 1800s. Makers bead floral patterns and stitch porcupine quillwork to reflect nature, spirituality, and family lineage. They pass these techniques from one generation to the next. During the fur trade era, European traders and voyageurs embraced Cree moccasins for their comfort and durability.
