Classic Deer Toe Leg Rattles with Red‑Wool Accents

These handmade Deer Toe Leg Rattles are crafted on cream‑colored deerskin leather. Each rattle features deer toes that hang down 4″ to 6″.  The crafter added a small strip of red wool set inside each toe.  They offer a traditional, rhythmic sound and showcase classic handmade construction. This set came from a collection so you will see that one rattle has 16 toes, though 2 are missing, while the other still has 18 toes. The overall length of the pair measures approximately 14 inches. Each rattle includes a space for your own ties, allowing you to secure them in the style you prefer.

One of a Kind.

History of the Deer Toe Leg Rattle

Deer Toe Leg Rattles hold a place in the ceremonial traditions of many Native communities across the Eastern Woodlands and Plains. Native artisans use naturally available materials—deer toes, hide, and wool—to create instruments that produce a clear, rhythmic sound during dances and gatherings. Hunters save the hardened toe caps as they process deer and string them together to create a distinctive clicking tone. Artisans attach the toes to leather straps and add wool or cloth accents. Dancers wear these rattles just below the knee, and their movements activate the rhythm and strengthen the communal energy of the ceremony. Today, Native makers continue this craft and preserve ancestral techniques. They honor the enduring significance of dance, rhythm, and tradition within their communities.
