SOLD This 6" Tear Drop Turkey Beard Roach in Red is a spectacular example of mid-20th century craftsmanship. The artisan constructed the base with clipped red deer hair and substituted traditional porcupine hair with striking turkey beard feathers. This roach features two half rows of dark turkey beard feathers—one positioned inside and one outside the red deer hair at the front. The front feathers rise dramatically, standing over 6 inches high and creating a bold, upright silhouette.
Measuring approximately 6 inches in length and 2 inches at its widest point, this roach showcases the distinctive tear drop shape favored in ceremonial styles. It includes a plastic form for safe storage and preservation. Crafted between the 1950s and 1960s, this piece reflects both innovation and tradition in Native American regalia design. One of a Kind!
Roaches are one type of traditional headwear for Native American Dance Regalia.  You can attach a roach to your head with a small hair braid (or scalplock) pulled though the center hole and fasten with a roach pin,  or use a roach spreader.   We also offer handmade 16″ & 18″ Long Porcupine Roaches and Round Eastern Style Roaches.   Porcupine hair roaches can vary in size and shape, with some being relatively short and compact, while others are longer and fuller.  Crafters can customize the design of the roach to reflect the individual wearer's preferences or tribal traditions.  They arrange the dyed hair in rows or sections, to create a vibrant and eye-catching display.
