Antique Whimsy Scalloped Pin Cushion
Antique Whimsy Scalloped Pin CushionAn Iroquois crafter beaded this scalloped edge Pin Cushion Whimsy using Clear Pony Beads. He or she used White Seed Beads to outline the design area. You will also see Basket Beads in Red, Amber and some indeterminable color. The crafter also added a Basket Bead hanging loop one one end, so you could hang this Whimsy to display it.
It is a classic example of the Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.
This Pin Cushion features a botanical design. The crafter beaded the design on a purple velveteen fabric which has mostly worn away. Polished cotton in a spruce green surrounded by white bias tape edging makes up the back. You will see holes in the back fabric and sawdust is coming out.
A previous owner had this Whimsy Pin Cushion and it shows its age. Much of the velveteen has worn away. You will also see that beads from the main design have fallen off. Age has darkened the Beads as well. The hanging loop of Basket Beads remains intact.
It measures about 6.5" across and 8.25" top to bottom. The hanging chain measures about 3" long. The thickness is about 1.5".
One of a kind!
