Acoma Seed Pot

This beautifully decorated Pottery- Seed Pot showcases the classic Seed Pot form.  The potter formed this petite pot and covered it with white slip.  Then, they painted bold red and black dragonflies and geometric designs on the top.  The potter signed the base: “A. Lowden – ACOMA 15.”

This Seed Pot stands approximately 1.25 inches tall and measures 5.5 inches in diameter, with a 1/8‑inch opening. It remains in excellent condition, and it still contains a seed—an appealing detail for collectors who appreciate authenticity.

Historically, Native Americans used vessels like this to store seeds through the winter for planting the following year. Its small opening protected the contents from pests and prevented spillage, making the design both beautiful and functional.  Acoma pottery, created in the Pueblo of New Mexico, is highly valued for its exceptionally thin walls and refined craftsmanship. Artists traditionally hand‑coil their pottery and favor black, white, and red slip colors—hallmarks that collectors actively seek.
