Red Willow Bark has pain reduction and inflammation reduction properties (from the salicyclic acid).  It may work in a way similar to aspirin.  Historically, users chewed small amounts of the bark to release the salicyclic acid.

Native Americans have traditionally added to Red Willow Bark to their smoking mixtures.
