Moccasins Infant Beaded Vamp

The crafter made these vintage vamp-style infant moccasins in the 1960s using brain-tanned deer hide and a center seam construction. They stitched the moccasins with thread and added a beautiful floral beaded design to the vamp. The moccasins remain in good wearable condition, though the bottoms show some darkening and one cuff has a small hole.

They measure 5″ long and 2″ across.

One of a kind!

Cree artisans craft moccasins to express cultural identity, skill, and connection to the land. Thus, they use smoked moosehide or deerskin to create soft soles for quiet movement—ideal for hunting, snowshoeing, and ceremony. Many follow a two-piece design with an apron insert, a style rooted in the Red River region by the early 1800s. Makers bead floral patterns and stitch porcupine quillwork to reflect nature, spirituality, and family lineage. They pass these techniques from one generation to the next. During the fur trade era, European traders and voyageurs embraced Cree moccasins for their comfort and durability. Today, communities preserve and celebrate them through museum collections and initiatives like the Moccasin Identifier, which affirms treaty relationships and Indigenous presence across Turtle Island.
