This rust‑colored deerskin pouch offers instant visual appeal with its rich tone and soft hide. The crafter made it with German‑tanned deerskin.  On the front he attached a rust colored deerskin piece with a 4″ x 2.25″ beaded panel.   He added some beaded lines and edge beading to the closure flap.  The crafter cut the edges of the rust leather into 2.5″ fringe around 3 sides of the pouch.   He strung the 27″ long deerskin leather strap with three white plastic crow beads. The pouch measures 5″ x 4″ (not including the fringe), with an easy‑access opening of 4″ x 3.5″. This is a beautifully crafted piece ready for display, wear, or collection.

Deerskin pouches have a long history across North America, where they served as essential personal containers for many Native nations. Crafted from soft, durable deerhide, these pouches held medicine, tobacco, tools, and other daily or ceremonial items. As trade expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries, artisans incorporated new materials such as glass seed beads, metal cones, and German‑tanned hides, blending traditional construction with evolving designs. By the early 20th century, artisans made deerskin pouches for both community use and collectors, often showcasing regional beadwork styles. Today, they remain valued for their craftsmanship, cultural significance, and connection to longstanding Indigenous traditions.
