Braintanned Bison/Elk Dress

This handmade Braintanned Bison/Elk Dress is crafted from exceptionally thick, heavy, and durable hide. This traditional-style garment features strong hand-stitched seams created with imitation sinew for lasting strength. The crafter added six 17-inch braintanned leather lace drops across the front and back.  These provide you with a foundation for adding your own personal embellishments and finishing touches. Finished with 2-inch fringe along both sides and the bottom edge, this unique piece showcases quality craftsmanship, natural materials, and timeless design.

The dress measures approximately 14 inches across the neck opening, 44 inches across the shoulders, 25 inches across the middle, and 41 inches across the bottom. It has a total length of 46.5 inches.   We estimate it to be a size Large.

Elk or bison hide dresses have a long history among several Indigenous peoples of North America, especially in regions where these animals were plentiful. Traditionally, these heavy hides were valued because they are strong, warm, flexible, and durable.  Native Americans found them well suited for clothing that could withstand daily life, travel, and changing weather.
