One of a Kind.
Peace Medals trace back to the 18th and early 19th centuries, when the United States issued large, portrait‑bearing medals to Native leaders as diplomatic gifts. Presidents such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson authorized these medals to symbolize alliance, mutual respect, and the promise of peaceful relations. The reverse design—two hands clasped beneath crossed tomahawk and pipe—reinforced the message of “Peace and Friendship,” a phrase that became iconic across treaty councils and diplomatic exchanges. Original medals were treasured items worn during negotiations, councils, and public gatherings, and their imagery remains one of the most recognizable symbols of early U.S.–Native diplomacy.
