Catlinite Pipe History

Catlinite pipes have a long and meaningful history across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Communities valued this smooth, reddish stone for ceremonial and diplomatic use. Often called pipestone, Catlinite comes from quarries in what is now southwestern Minnesota. These places served as sacred gathering sites for many generations. Artisans shaped the stone into bowls because it carves easily and polishes well, making it ideal for pipes used in prayer, agreements, and important gatherings. In the 19th century, painter and writer George Catlin documented these quarries and the significance of the stone. His work led to the material becoming widely known as “Catlinite.” For many Native peoples, the pipe remains a symbol of respect, connection, and shared intention. The quarries continue to hold cultural importance today.
