Whimsy Pin Cushion Purple
A crafter created this Antique Purple Pin Cushion Whimsy in a spade shape. The artist used clear, transparent yellow, blue, green and red seed beads with gray basket beads to make the raised pictorial design on purple velvet fabric. They also used turquois and dark green basket beads on the tassels. The whimsy is in good condition with little bead loss and fading on the purple fabric. Red fabric once lined the sides and can still be seen on the back of the piece. The polished cotton back has some staining.
This whimsy is a classic example of Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.
