Antique Sweetgrass & Ash Basket

This Basket Antique Sweetgrass & Ash with Lid will make a nice addition to your collection or you can use it as decorative storage container. It comes complete with a cover. The basket maker used very thin Ash Splints and strands of braided Sweetgrass to make the basket.  They wrapped sweetgrass around the top of the basket and the edge of the cover.  The basket maker attached wider strip of Ash to the top of the cover to serve as a handle. This basket does show some signs of wear, but it is still in good condition. The Basket stands 4.5″ tall with the cover on and measures 7″ in diameter.

Native Americans in the Northeast make them out of many materials including birch bark, split wood of ash trees and sweetgrass, the strongest being those made from the wood of brown or black  trees, known as basket trees.
