One of a Kind.

Cradleboards have long served as essential infant carriers across many Native nations. Makers built them from wood, rawhide, fabric or leather. Soft interior linings kept infants secure and comfortable. Designs varied by region and tradition, reflecting each community’s teachings and aesthetics. Many cradleboards carried painted or beaded motifs tied to lineage and identity. Caregivers wore them on their backs, and they propped them upright during daily tasks. Families hung cradleboards safely inside the home, allowing infants to rest within view of daily activity. These positions let infants observe and engage with their surroundings. Beyond practical use, cradleboards symbolized care, continuity, and community. They remain enduring expressions of cultural artistry and family tradition.
