The Soul of the Indian by Charles Alexander Eastman (Ohiyesa).

This reprints one of Eastman’s memoirs. Charles Eastman was a Sioux man who became a doctor. He treated the victims of the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee.

In it, Eastman describes Native American religion and the spirit world as they were perceived in the pre-contact period. It emphasizes their deep connection to nature and the “Great Mystery.”

It is unique and offers a firsthand account of Native spirituality, unshaped by external interpretations from anthropologists or missionaries.
