Whimsy Antique Box and Pincushion

Whimsy Antique Box and Pincushion

A crafter created this Antique Box and Pincushion Whimsy around 1900. It is a classic example of Beaded Whimsy tourist souvenirs. Native American crafters in the border regions between Canada and the United States at the turn of the 20th century created many of these whimsies for the tourist trade.
The artist used Clear Seed Beads and Gray Basket Beads on yellow and red velveteen fabric for the box. The red fabric has worn away but you can still see some of the fibers. The inside of the box is lined with polished cotton. The crafter added clear bead tassels to the bottom and a hanging loop made of clear seed beads and blue basket beads. There is some bead loss on the tassels. The box measures 3" x 3" x 3".
The pincushion has clear, white and silver seed beads along with silver basket beads. The pin cushion measures 2" in diameter and 1" tall.
