Trade Beads Strand Antique Chevrons
Trade Beads Strand Antique Chevrons
Trade Beads Strand Antique Chevrons are a must have for the discerning collector or artist. Such a set of large Chevron Beads is an unusual find! This strand comes with 21 large Chevron Beads. They vary in size from 1 1/8" long x 0.75" diameter to 2" long x 1.25" in diameter. Keep this collection together for display or match up pairs to use for reproduction products. These six layer Red, White & Blue Chevrons are in very good condition for their age. Some of them do show chips and discoloration. You will see someone repaired a broken bead and one bead has some 'pock' marks on it as if someone banged on it.
History of Trade Beads
Bead makers in Venice, Italy made the first Chevron Beads near the end of the 14th century. Traders carried these layered glass beads to North America and Africa. They are highly desirable due to the complexity of their manufacture. In fact, craftsmen were not permitted to leave their factories in order to prevent them from sharing the technology. From the 15th to the 20th century, traders carried European glass beads across the world. The beads were highly desired by Native Americans, as glass was then an unknown substance in North American. European glass beads, mostly from Venice, became popular and sought after by Native Americans. Europeans realized early on that beads were important to Native Americans and corporations such as the Hudson Bay Trading Company developed lucrative bead-trading markets with them.
