SOLD This antique Roach- Deer Hair Base is a remarkable piece of traditional regalia, showcasing both artistry and age. Crafted with red deer hair on both the inside and outside, the roach reflects the meticulous skill of its maker. Each strand of deer hair has been carefully attached in very fine bundles, creating a dense and upright appearance. Over time and through use, the hair has naturally thinned, particularly along the outer edges, giving the piece a distinctive patina that speaks to its history.
Measuring 7.5 inches in length, the roach remains wrapped to preserve its form, and the wrapping keeps the hair standing upright as intended. Complementing the deer hair are tufts of porcupine hair, attached in similarly tiny bundles. These vary in length, adding texture and dimension to the overall design.
