Powder Horn with Deerhair Drops
Powder Horn with Deerhair DropsThis small Powder Horn comes with Copper Cone Deerhair Drops. We think the crafter made it from a Goat Horn as it is small and slightly flattened. The fitted wooden closures at both ends of the horn keep your powder dry. The crafter nailed the large end closure to the horn, so this Powder Horn is for show only. You will see the makers mark on the narrow end.
Chris added the Braintanned Deerskin Leather Lacing Strap and the Deerhair Drops. He dyed the Deerskin Leather Lacing with walnut so it is very dark. It also varies in width. Chris wrapped the top of each drop with Porcupine Quills in Red, White or Black. Additionally he added an antique Trade Bead to the strap.
This Powder Horn measures approx. 7" long. The Braintanned Deerskin Leather Lacing Strap measures 21" long.
Powder horns are containers used to hold gunpowder. Historically, soldiers made Powder Horns from cow, oxen or buffalo horns. Natural horn has the advantage of being waterproof and already hollow inside. Stoppers of wood or bone or horn inserted at each end of the horn kept the powder dry. A soldier filled the horn with gunpowder at the large end, and dispensed powder from the smaller end. Soldiers sometimes decorated their Powder Horns with carvings or inlays. They usually carried them with a long strap over their shoulder.
The Wandering Bull offers Powder Horns as collectible items. Historical re-enactors also use Powder Horns as part of their kit.
