Pipe Soapstone Otter Effigy

Handmade Soapstone Otter Effigy Pipe

SOLD This Pipe Soapstone Otter Effigy comes from an artist in Maine. He created this reproduction pipe based on historical examples from New England. The artist made the entire pipe from soapstone. He carved the pipe bowl itself in the form of a Native American clay pot complete with a cross-hatched edge.  He added the three dimensional otter carving to the side.  The carving features eyes, ears, mouth and toe marks.  The Pipe measures just about 9 inches long overall.  The bowl stands 2.25 inches tall.   The stem portion measures 6.5 inches long by about 0.5 inches in diameter.   The Otter carving measures 2.5  inches x 1.25 inches.  One of a Kind!
Various Native American tribes have made and used soapstone pipes for centuries. Soapstone is a type of metamorphic rock that is relatively soft and easy to carve. Native American crafters value it for its workability and heat-retaining properties, making it suitable for crafting pipes.
This Pipe Soapstone Otter Effigy is a functional pipe.  It is heavy and fragile, so we recommend keeping it for display.  One of a Kind!
