Northern Plains Junk Bandolier

This Northern Plains Junk Bandolier is a fascinating find! Also known in this instance as a "dew claw bandolier," the original artist constructed it circa 1970 with strap leather, deerskin lace, carved deer toes and countless odds and ends. Details include bells, coins, mescal beans, metal components, and various kinds of beads. This style was popular in the early 1900's on the Northern Plains.

From M. S. Tucker's Old Time Sioux Dancers:

"Bandoliers were strings worn over the shoulder and across the chest, hanging down to the dancer's hip. They can be worn with any combination of old-time Sioux outfit. Usually one or two strands were worn over one shoulder only - not criss-crossed like a straight dancer's. ~ Common bandoliers were made of brass beads, or brass beads and hairpipes. ~ The 'dew claw' bandolier was the most ornate being made of a long strap of harness leather with carved hooves (dew claws), thimbles, glass 'chandelier beads' and other small objects."

This bandolier measures 62" around and is 1/2" wide. The accessorized drops hang about 4" (on average) off the leather.
