SOLD This Men's Traditional Style Crow Bustle showcases 63 meticulously tied bundles of rooster hackles—both natural and dyed blue—secured with metal hooks along a foundation of heavy strap leather. Hand-painted orange rooster hackles accent the bottom of the spikes, while light blue fluffs add movement and contrast. Navy blue wool forms the bustle’s straps, and trade cloth with a visible selvage edge creates the trailers. Brown turkey feathers shape the trailer plumes, each accented with soft pink fluffs for added color. Brass tacks embellish the heavy leather strap, offering a subtle yet striking decorative element that reflects the care and craftsmanship.
The Bustle Measures 14" wide x 15" long, Trailers measure 25" long x 6" wide, and the spikes measure 17" long. One of a Kind.
The traditional Crow-style bustle has deep roots in Plains tribal ceremonial regalia, especially among the Omaha and Ponca peoples. Select dancers wore this style—sometimes called Kaxe’ or “Crow”—during early Hethuska ceremonies. It replaced the otter trailer as a mark of distinction. The bustle evolved within the broader war dance tradition, which carried deep spiritual and social meaning. These dances honored warrior identity and celebrated bravery, honor, and cultural continuity. The bustle’s circular shape, often made with eagle or hawk feathers, symbolized unity and sacred protection. Over time, the Crow-style bustle became a signature part of men's regalia at powwows and ceremonies. Its single, dramatic feathered arrangement worn at the back made it instantly recognizable.
