Blanket Strip - Plains Style

This Blanket Strip is in the Plains Style. To create this blanket strip, the artist first lazy stitch beaded their design on one piece of leather. Then they backed it on another piece of leather. Pale blue ribbon tassels hang from the center of each rosette. Three out of the four tassels have metal beads on them.
The artist beaded this blanket strip with 11/0 Seed Beads. For the lazy stitch rosettes, they used 11/0 Royal Blue, Yellow, and Red seed beads for the pattern and White Seed Beads for the background. They repeated the same color scheme for the remainder of the strip. The artist beaded the rectangle panels with triangle and stripe pattern on a white background.
The Native Americans of the Northern Plains created Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Buffalo hides were often cut in half when tanning. Subsequently, Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when a Braintanned Buffalo Hide was sewn back together. Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes. They added their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.
This Blanket Strip measures 59 3/8" long. It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 5 1/4" in diameter.
