Blanket Strip – Crow Style

Blanket Strip - Crow Style

This Seed Beaded Blanket Strip - Crow Style features 4 Rosettes.  The crafter beaded the strip on canvas then backed it Deerskin Leather. Ribbon tassels hang from the center of each rosette. Each tassel has dark green, navy blue, dusty pink, and red ribbons held together with a metal bead.
The crafter beaded this strip with 10/0 and 11/0 Seed Beads. For the applique stitch rosettes they used 10/0 Reproduction Sioux Green, Cheyenne Pink, Greasy Yellow, and Transparent Dark Green seed beads. They composed the remainder of the strip with 5 panels of lazy stitch beaded with 11/0 Pony Beads in Greasy Yellow, Light Blue, Cheyenne Pink, Trans. Dark Green and Sioux Green.
The Native Americans of the Northern Plains created Beaded Blanket Strips in the mid 19th century. Blanket Strips originated as a means to cover the seam when a Buffalo Hide was sewn back together . Lots of time Buffalo hides were cut in half when they were tanned.  Eventually, Native American crafters began to use wool Trade Blankets for robes. They added their beaded strips to them in a purely decorative manner.
This Blanket Strip measures 61 1/4" long. It includes a total of 4 rosettes, each measuring 5 5/8" in diameter.
