Birchbark Rogan

Birchbark Rogan

This Birchbark Rogan is a beautiful example of craftsmanship from the north woods of Ontario, Canada. Many of these baskets are made in two pieces. This Birchbark Rogan is made from one large piece of birchbark. At 16" x 12", this is about as large as Rogans come! Birchbark Rogans were used as storage containers. This one features scraped self patterns for designs. The sides are beautifully designed with a moose, a stylized bird and a running rabbit. Three large floral elements tower over the animal designs.
The lid has minor binding missing, as is shown in the photograph. The cover design is a mirror image of rabbits nibbling on a floral element!
This Birchbark Rogan was made around 1960 and its overall condition is very good. The honey color bark is much sought after by collectors. Spruce root was used to construct this traditional Birchbark Rogan. For extra strength and support, a willow support is whip stitched to the top edge. The leather handles and lid ties are made from braintanned moose hide.
