Antique Whimsy Pincushion

Antique Whimsy Pincushion
Native Americans in the border regions between Canada and the United States produced beaded tourist souvenirs that are known as Whimsies.  They shaped beads and fabric into novelty mementos. These souvenirs took the shape of purses, pillows, needle cases and pincushions. Thus, this Antique Whimsy Pincushion represents a classic example of the Beaded Whimsies created at the turn of the 20th century. This unique star shaped Whimsy Pincushion features the words DEAR AUNT spelled out on green velveteen. Also, multi colored seed beads surround the words.  The artisan beaded each arm of the star in a different bead color.  He or she then strung assorted beads into loops. These loops are attached as tassels to 3 of the arms.  A loop of basket beads serves as a hanging loop at the top. This pin cushion is stuffed with sawdust. The velveteen fabric on this whimsy shows some wear.  But, all of the beads remain in place, though they are a little dusty. Don't miss this unique collectible! This Whimsy measures 4.5" across and 1" high. One of a Kind!
