Powder horn – Scrimshaw
Powder Horn Ink Scrimshaw
This Powder Horn features geometric designs engraved in ink. As a result, the engravings lend a vintage look to the horn. The engravings include compass points, the date 3/19/86 and the words 'Defend and Spare Not'.This Powder Horn retains both of its fitted wooden end closures. In addition, the smaller end closure attaches to the horn itself with a piece of Leather Lacing. That will help keep you from losing it! This Horn also comes with an antiqued Leather Lacing Strap.
Powder horns are containers used to hold gunpowder. Historically, soldiers made Powder Horns from cows, oxen or buffalo horns. Natural horn has the advantage of being waterproof and already hollow inside. Stoppers of wood or bone or horn were placed at each end of the horn. A soldier filled the horn with gunpowder at the large end, and dispensed powder from the smaller end.
Soldiers sometimes decorated their Powder Horns with scrimshaw carvings or inlays. They usually carried them with a long strap over their shoulder.
The Wandering Bull offers Powder Horns as collectible items. Historical re-enactors also use Powder Horns as part of their kit.
