Heishi shells are small, disc- or tube-shaped beads traditionally made from organic shells or stones. They originate from the Kewa Pueblo people (formerly Santo Domingo Pueblo) of New Mexico. The word “heishi” comes from the Keresan language, meaning “shell bead”. These beads are crafted by slicing shells or stones into strips, cutting them into small squares, drilling holes, and then grinding and polishing them into smooth, uniform shapes. Common materials include spiny oyster, mother-of-pearl, and melon shell, as well as stones like turquoise and lapis. Heishi beads are valued for their cultural significance, meticulous craftsmanship, and unique appearance. They are often used in necklaces and other jewelry, showcasing a blend of tradition and artistry.
