Totem Pole Alert Bay

Totem Pole Alert Bay

This small Totem Pole comes from Alert Bay in British Columbia. A description in pencil on the back of the totem reads "Made by the Nimpkish Indians of Alert Bay B.C ... reproduction of pole now in Stanley park, Vancouver B.C." It appears to be dated 1915. The craftsman carved an eagle body, bear, and human from a solid piece of wood. After creating the initial carving, they nailed on a second piece for the wings of the eagle. The craftsman painted the totem with green, yellow, brown, white, black, and blue paint. They also added a black square stand to the base of the totem making it easy to display. Overall, this totem is in decent condition with no major breakage or paint chips. Small scuffs to the paint can be attributed to age. There is additional cursive writing in pencil on the base, but it is not legible.
This totem measures 8 3/4" from base to top. Wingspan is 5 1/4" wide. Base is 2" x 2."
