Hopi Style Animal Dish

Add this Hopi-style Pottery Animal Dish to your collection or use it to hold small items! This handcrafted dish features geometric designs along its sides, painted in black over a light-colored slip. The artist applied a subtle polish to the exterior, enhancing its smooth finish. You may notice reddish coloration in some areas, likely a result of the firing process.

The dish stands approximately 2 inches tall, with a top opening measuring 2.5 inches in diameter and 4.5 inches long. Acquired from a collection, this piece shows minor wear on the bottom of the feet, where some paint has rubbed off. Structurally, it remains in good condition, making it a wonderful addition to any Native American pottery collection.

One of a Kind!

 Native American Pottery

Native American potters in the Southwestern United States make traditional style pottery. Their pottery usually features very thin walls, which is a desirable characteristic. Many of these artists create their pottery using hand coiled techniques. They often use clay slip colors in Black, White and dark Red.

Hopi-style pottery is a distinctive form of Native American artistry, deeply rooted in tradition and craftsmanship. It is known for its earth-toned palette, often featuring buff-colored bases adorned with intricate designs in terra cotta and black paint.

Hopi potters have been creating pottery for centuries, using hand-coiling techniques rather than pottery wheels or molds. Traditionally, pottery-making was a social activity, primarily practiced by women, fostering community connections through the gathering of clay, painting, and firing.
